Move aside, chalky protein shakes! This chocolate peanut butter protein shake is SUPER creamy, rich, and chocolatey. Made with NO protein powder, this recipe has 33 grams of protein from Greek yogurt, peanut butter, and soy milk. With nearly 10 grams of fiber and healthy fats, too, this protein smoothie is a smart choice as a high protein, high fiber meal replacement because it won’t leave you feeling hungry 30 minutes later.

Did you know you can make a protein shake WITHOUT protein powder?

With a thoughtful combination of ingredients, this chocolate peanut butter protein smoothie has over 30 grams of protein!

As a Registered Dietitian, I’d happily recommend this recipe to you to refuel after a workout, or as an on-the-go breakfast option.

Since this chocolate protein shake has a good amount of fiber (nearly 10 grams!) + plenty of healthy fats IN ADDITION to the protein, it’s truly a well-balanced meal option that will actually keep you full for more than an hour.

Where does the protein come from in this protein shake?

Each ingredient in this smoothie contributes some protein:

  • Unsweetened soy milk: Of all the plant-based milks, soy milk comes out on top in terms of protein. One cup of soy milk has 8 grams of protein. I’ve also tested this recipe with regular milk, which works just as well + contributes the same amount of protein!
  • Plain Greek yogurt: Greek yogurt is a protein powerhouse. Half a cup in this smoothie = 12 grams of protein. This smoothie works well with nonfat, low-fat, or full fat Greek yogurt. Your choice! You’ll also find it in my Greek yogurt and frozen fruit smoothie.
  • Peanut butter: Two tablespoons of peanut butter makes this shake rich and creamy, plus it has 8 grams of protein and heart-healthy unsaturated fats. I strongly prefer to use natural peanut butter (only ingredient is peanuts and maybe salt). If you use natural peanut butter, too, it contributes 3 grams of dietary fiber to this recipe.
  • Hemp seeds: A tablespoon of hemp seeds does not impact the flavor or the texture of this protein shake, and adds 3.3 grams of protein.
  • Unsweetened cocoa powder: It might come as a surprise, but cocoa powder has lots of nutrition benefits. The two tablespoons in this recipe supply 1 gram of protein and nearly 2 grams of fiber.
  • Ripe frozen banana: Banana adds natural sweetness and creamy texture. Plus, 1 gram of protein and 3 grams of fiber!

Description

Move aside, chalky protein shakes! This chocolate peanut butter protein shake is SUPER creamy, rich, and chocolatey. Instructions

  1. Add all of the ingredients to a blender, in the order listed.
  2. Blend on high for 30 seconds – 1 minute, or until the protein shake is completely blended, smooth, and creamy.
  3. Pour into a glass and enjoy!

Notes

To help the blender work efficiently, add the ingredients in the order listed (softest to hardest).

I’ve tested this recipe using both a high-powered Vitamix blender and a NutriBullet blender. Both blenders work fine, but using the NutriBullet might leave you with some small chunks of unblended frozen banana.
