High Protein Green Smoothie with Spinach
Get your greens AND your protein in with this green protein smoothie! It has about 31 grams of protein from a dietitian-approved combination of whole food ingredients and NO protein powder. Its ultra-creamy, super filling, and quick to make as healthy breakfast idea or post-workout recovery smoothie.

As a Registered Dietitian, I take my smoothies seriously.
If I’m choosing a smoothie over a solid, chewable meal, it has to be delicious, filling, and satisfying – like my chocolate peanut butter protein shake.
This means it’s got to have the right balance of important macronutrients: protein, carbs, fiber, and healthy fats.
This green protein smoothie is well-balanced AND gets bonus points from the addition of spinach. It’s always a good idea to blend vegetables into smoothies because they add vitamins, minerals, and fiber.
I promise, you cannot taste the spinach in this smoothie thanks to the frozen banana and frozen mango chunks. It has a similar flavor as my spinach and kale green smoothie.

Where does the protein come from in this protein shake?
This recipe features a thoughtful combination of ingredients to deliver about 31 grams of high quality protein without relying on protein powder!
- Plain Greek yogurt: Greek yogurt is packed with protein (and other nutrients like calcium and probiotics). We’re using half a cup in this green smoothie protein shake, which contributes 12 grams of protein. I’ve tested this smoothie using 2% reduced fat and 5% full fat Greek yogurt, and I am confident you can also use nonfat Greek yogurt with good results.
- Soy milk or regular milk: Did you know soy milk has just about the same amount of protein as regular milk? Either option contributes 12 grams of protein to this smoothie in 1 1/2 cups.
- Hemp seeds: A tablespoon of hemp seeds provides 3.3 grams of protein.
- Frozen banana and frozen mango chunks: Even bananas and mangos have a little bit of protein! Each contributes 1 gram of protein to this recipe.
- Baby spinach: 2 handfuls of fresh baby spinach lends 1.7 grams of protein to this protein shake with spinach. I like to use baby spinach for green smoothies because it has a slightly sweet, mild flavor and it does NOT impact the flavor of the smoothie.
