If you have an air fryer, add this air fryer carrot fries recipe to your list! They’re so easy to make in under 20 minutes, and you need just five simple ingredients. Carrot fries are a healthier alternative to French fries, especially when made in an air fryer instead of deep fried. Serve them as a nutritious side dish with your favorite burger!

As a Registered Dietitian, I love to create healthy vegetable recipes that appeal to a wide range of people. These carrot fries are kid friendly and good for picky eaters. The quick heat from the air fryer caramelizes the sugars in the carrots, and they basically taste like sweet potato fries!

Is air frying healthy?

Air fryers give food a crispy texture similar to deep-fried foods by circulating hot air around the food. Instead of submerging the food completely in oil, you need just a few teaspoons of oil to make air fried food. This significantly lowers the amount of calories and fat in your recipe, which definitely makes it healthier!

Deep-fried foods are high in saturated fat, which is the type of dietary fat we want to limit in our diets. A diet high in saturated fat is linked to increased risk of heart disease.

Using an air fryer to cook with can reduce your saturated fat intake by replacing deep-fried foods with air fried foods. By doing so, you will also reduce your overall calorie intake, which can have weight loss and weight management benefits.

Ingredients in air fryer carrot fries

You need just five ingredients to make these carrot fries:

  • Carrots: Try to choose relatively thick carrots for this recipe, since you will cut them lengthwise into thin fries.
  • Extra virgin olive oil: You just need 2 teaspoons of oil for this air fryer recipe.
  • Adobo seasoning: This delicious and versatile seasoning is a mix of garlic, onion, black pepper, oregano, and turmeric. If you don’t have adobo seasoning on hand, you can just use garlic powder and some black pepper.
  • Salt and pepper

These carrot fries are naturally vegan, gluten free, soy free, nut free, and dairy free. This recipe serves two generously as a side dish.

Carrot fries are best enjoyed right away, but you can always store them for later in an airtight container in the fridge for a few days. They actually taste good cold, and I like to chop up extra carrot fries and put them in a salad!

How to make air fryer carrot fries

  1. This recipe couldn’t be easier to make! First, start by peeling your carrots and chopping off the ends. If the carrots are particularly long, chop them in half to a more reasonable French fry size.
  2. Slice the carrots lengthwise into 1/4th inch thick fries. Try to keep the size and shape of the carrot fries consistent to ensure that they cook evenly in the air fryer.
  3. Transfer the carrots to a medium mixing bowl. Add the olive oil, adobo seasoning, salt, and pepper. Gently toss everything together so the carrots are all coated in the seasonings.
  4. Put the carrots on your air fryer tray or in the basket. Spread them out so there is a little space between each carrot – you may need to do this in batches depending on the size of your air fryer.
  5. Set your air fryer to 375 degrees F, and cook for 8-10 minutes. Start checking the carrot fries around 8 minutes to ensure they are not burning.
  6. Remove from the air fryer and dig in while they’re still hot!

Can you make carrot fries in the oven?

If you do not have an air fryer, you can try to make these carrot fries in the oven. However, they might turn out like roasted carrot sticks, rather than “fries”, since they won’t get quite as crispy.

If making this recipe in the oven, it is ideal if you have a convection oven setting, so the hot air will circulate around the carrots as they cook (as it would in an air fryer). Set the temperature to 375 degrees F and start by cooking for 15 minutes. Add more time as needed until the carrots are fully cooked.

Carrots nutrition benefits

Carrots are a nutritious root vegetable to include in your diet. Carrots are considered a relatively starchy vegetable, as a one cup serving of carrots provides 12 grams of carbohydrates. About a third of the carbs in carrots comes from dietary fiber – in fact, a serving of carrots provides 13 percent of your daily fiber needs (3.6 grams).

Carrots are an excellent source of Vitamin A, providing 119 percent of your daily needs (1068.8 mcg). The form of Vitamin A found in carrots most abundantly is beta-carotene, which has potent antioxidant properties.

In addition to Vitamin A, carrots are a source of several other micronutrients, including:

  • Vitamin K
  • Vitamin B6
  • Vitamin C
  • Potassium
