One of my top tips as a Registered Dietitian to make vegetables taste amazing? Add a flavorful dressing or sauce! This quick & easy lemon tahini sauce is one of my go-to sauces in the kitchen to add to all sorts of meals. Once you try it, you will understand why I love it so much!

This lemon tahini sauce is so easy to make, uses just four ingredients, and is super versatile. It also keeps well in the fridge, so you can store any leftover sauce in a jar for a few weeks. You don’t need any special equipment to make this sauce – just a mixing bowl and a whisk (or fork).

Ingredients in lemon tahini sauce

You just need four ingredients to make this sauce:

  • Tahini, which is basically sesame seed butter. It’s a staple in Middle Eastern, Eastern Mediterranean, and North African cuisine. Tahini is made from ground sesame seeds and has a nutty, earthy, slightly bitter taste on its own.
  • Lemon juice: adds brightness and freshness and really enhances the flavor of tahini.
  • Garlic and herb spice blend, or you can just use plain garlic powder.
  • Salt to enhance all the flavors in the tahini sauce.

You’ll also need to add a bit of cold water to the tahini sauce to create the proper smooth and creamy texture. This tahini sauce recipe is gluten free, vegan, soy free, dairy free, and nut free.

This sauce couldn’t be easier to make. Start by adding tahini, lemon juice, salt, and garlic and herb seasoning to a bowl. Then whisk everything together. You will notice the tahini seize up and become thick and grainy.

To make the sauce smooth and creamy, just add a bit of cold water and whisk it in. I recommend adding it a few tablespoons at time to control the runniness/consistency of the sauce.

Tahini nutrition benefits

Tahini is a highly nutrient dense food. It’s made out of sesame seeds, so it has a similar nutrient profile to other nut and seed butters. Two tablespoons of tahini provides:

  • 6 grams of protein
  • 3 grams of dietary fiber
  • 16 grams of fat, most of which is heart healthy unsaturated fat
  • An excellent source of copper
  • A good source of other micronutrients, including iron, selenium, zinc, and phosphorus

How to serve lemon tahini sauce

This lemon tahini sauce really tastes good on just about anything. Here are some of my favorite ways to incorporate it into my meals:

  • Drizzled on top of your favorite grilled or roasted vegetables
  • As a creamy salad dressing for a kale salad
  • A dip for veggie sticks and pita bread
  • A marinade for tofu or your favorite protein
  • A spread for a sandwich or wrap

Lemon tahini sauce variations

Try these other takes on lemon tahini sauce to mix things up, so you can have tahini sauces with every meal!

  • Cilantro lime tahini sauce: Swap the lemon juice for lime juice and add chopped cilantro. This is perfect with Mexican inspired dishes like tacos and burrito bowls.
  • Maple tahini sauce: Add 1-2 tablespoons of maple syrup to the recipe, omit the garlic and herb seasoning, and add a drop of hot sauce. This slightly sweet version of tahini sauce tastes amazing with fall and winter roasted vegetables, like Brussels sprouts, butternut squash, and sweet potatoes.
  • Turmeric tahini sauce: Omit the garlic and herb seasoning and add 1/2 tablespoon of tahini, 1 tbsp honey, and a generous shake of black pepper. This version can be used with lots of the same dishes you use the original lemon tahini sauce with.
