How to make chili spiced tofu tacos

First, drain tofu and wrap in a clean tea towel. Press between two plates for at least 10 minutes to soak up excess moisture. Then, crumble the tofu into small chunks with your hands. Prepare the tofu spice paste, and mix it into the tofu to coat.

Bake the tofu on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Mix it up halfway through baking.

While the tofu bakes, prepare the red cabbage slaw. Mix together cabbage, green onion, and cilantro. Prepare the dressing, pour over the cabbage and toss everything together.

Heat up the corn tortillas and make your tacos! Add slaw, tofu crumbles, and a few slices of avocado. Top with red pepper flakes, hot sauce, or a squeeze of lime juice for even more flavor. Instead of avocado, you could also serve these tacos with homemade guacamole!

Ingredients

Chili Spiced Tofu

  • 1 block firm or extra firm tofu, drained, wrapped in a clean tea towel, and pressed between two plates for 10+ minutes
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/3 cup white onion, diced
  • 1 tbsp lime juice
  • 1 1/2 tbsp tamari (gf) or soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp avocado oil
  • 1/2 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 1/2 tsp chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp cumin
  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper

Cabbage Slaw

  • 5 cups red cabbage, shredded
  • 2 green onions, thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup cilantro, finely chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tbsp lime juice
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1/2 tbsp Dijon mustard

  • 1 avocado, sliced
  • 6 corn tortillas

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 415F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Use your hands to crumble the pressed tofu into a mixing bowl. Crumbles should be 1/2-1 inch in size, as they will shrink down a bit when baked.
  3. Stir the garlic and onion into the bowl with tofu.
  4. In a separate small bowl, mix together the remaining tofu ingredients, plus a generous shake of salt and pepper. This will form a fairly thick but smooth spice paste.
  5. Pour the spice paste over the tofu and gently mix until it is evenly coated.
  6. Spread the tofu into an even layer onto the baking sheet. Bake for 25-30 minutes, mixing once halfway through baking. Tofu will be lightly browned and edges crunchy when done.
  7. While the tofu bakes, prepare the cabbage slaw.
  8. Add the cabbage to a large mixing bowl with green onions and cilantro.
  9. Mix the remaining ingredients, plus a generous shake of salt and pepper, together in a bowl or salad dressing shaker to form the dressing.
  10. Pour the dressing over the cabbage and toss thoroughly.
  11. To serve, warm the tortillas over the open flame of a gas cooktop, or in a cast iron skillet. Add some slaw, tofu, and a few avocado slices to each taco. Add additional toppings if desired, such as hot sauce, lime juice, red pepper flakes, or more cilantro.

Notes

  • The tofu shrinks up as it bakes, so this recipe serves 2-3. I recommend doubling the tofu recipe if you are serving 4 or more people.
