As someone who loves recipes with oats for breakfast, muesli is my new breakfast obsession! I tried it while visiting my sister and fell in love with the chewy texture. My Registered Dietitian brain instantly started plotting how to make my own high fiber muesli recipe for a whole grain breakfast.
Unlike granola which is baked and often sweetened, muesli is raw and unsweetened. It’s a lower sugar option that you can customize based on your preferences!

Since I started recipe testing, I’ve eaten muesli for breakfast every day for over a week and have figured out the perfect ratio of whole grains, nuts, and dried fruit. The key to the best muesli is the combination of these ingredients:
- Whole grains (the base) – Old fashioned rolled oats and bran flakes provide structure and most of the fiber.
- Nuts and seeds (for plant-based protein and healthy fats) – Choose two or three for texture and flavor variety. I like pepitas, sliced almonds, and chia seeds (which are the highest fiber seed).
- Dried fruit – Chopped dates and raisins add natural sweetness and chewy texture.
Once you’ve got this ratio down, you can customize your muesli recipe based on the ingredients you have in your pantry!
Making muesli is so easy!

Store it in a large glass jar in the pantry, and give the jar a gentle shake before serving, because the chia seeds tend to all sink to the bottom.
Here are my two favorite ways to eat museli:
- Like cold cereal: Pour muesli into a bowl. Add a few big spoonfuls of Greek yogurt + a generous pour of milk. Stir and top with fresh fruit if desired.
- Overnight muesli: Combine a 3/4 cup serving of muesli with 1/2 cup of Greek yogurt and half a cup of milk in an airtight container or jar. Stir, cover, and pop it in the fridge to soak overnight. The next morning, add a splash of milk and enjoy.

- 1/4 cup raw sliced almonds

Store in a large glass jar in the pantry for up to 4 weeks.
Ingredient notes:
- I like Post Bran Flakes for this recipe.
- I prefer to use thicker old fashioned rolled oats because they have a chewier, more robust texture. The two I recommend are Bob’s Red Mill Extra Thick Rolled Oats or Trader Joe’s Gluten Free Rolled Oats.
One serving = 3/4 cup or about 75 grams.
