Crispy Salt and Pepper Tofu (Vegan, Gluten Free)

Description

This crispy salt and pepper tofu will be your new favorite tofu recipe! Crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, this tofu has yummy salt and pepper flavor, tossed in the most delicious ginger garlic mixture.


Ingredients

  • 1 block tofu, pressed and cut into large cubes
  • 3 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 tsp black pepper, divided
  • 1 tsp salt, divided
  • 2 tbsp canola oil, divided
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 inch piece fresh ginger, peeled and minced
  • 3 scallions, thinly sliced

Instructions

  1. Press the tofu for at least 30 minutes to remove excess water. Cut into large blocks, about 1.5 inches long.
  2. Whisk together cornstarch and half the salt and pepper in a shallow bowl.
  3. Dip each tofu cube in the cornstarch mixture, coating all sides in a thin layer.
  4. Heat half the canola oil in a shallow frying pan over medium heat. Add the tofu, being careful not to crowd the pan (you may need to cook tofu in a few batches).
  5. Cook tofu on one side for 2-3 minutes, until golden brown and crispy. Then, flip and cook on the remaining sides. Remove and place tofu on a paper towel to remove excess oil.
  6. In the same pan, heat the remaining canola oil. Add garlic, ginger, and scallions. Cook for 2-3 minutes until fragrant.
  7. Put the tofu in a mixing bowl, and gently toss with the garlic/ginger/scallion mixture.
  8. Serve right away with your favorite vegetable side dish and a grain for a complete, balanced meal.

Notes

Best served right away. If reheating, do so in the oven to maintain crispiness.
